During the years I spent on Manus I also heard or read similar stories about the treatment of Indigenous peopulations incarcerated in Australia. Despite our different histories and our remoteness from each other, I recognised details in the accounts of their imprisonment that were reflected in my own experiences [...] two pieces of a larger puzzle. […] they described a system that I could recognise [...] the name of units in the detention facility] Lorikeet, Magpie, Brolga, Kingfisher, and Jacana. These prison facilities employ the same logic, and they learn from each other. They make what is everyday and familiar carry a sense of fear by remaking its associations, whether it is the name of a bird or its song or colour-words which become code-words for emergencies.
