When I arrived at the detention centre, I was scared to see giant walls and
fences. While the migration officers checked our bodies and stole our leftover
money and mobile phones, I saw hundreds of people waiting in the detention
centre and my heart sank. Over time, I came to learn that some of them had been

It was while I was in detention that I improved my English with the help of some books a friend of mine in Yangon had sent me. Writing in English became an essential skill for me in more than one way: Refugees often need to write emails to UNHCR and IOM to inquire about medical support or about their resettlement status, as well as many other issues.
