Mapping the Archipelago
This page guides users through spatial and temporal patterns of islands of confinement.
We have opted to use maps and timelines to encourage a broader understanding of this material. However, it should be considered with the knowledge that digital maps and timelines create the illusion of a detached, neutral view of time and space.
In each site, we have curated literary and historical content that speaks to contemporary and diverse views of island confinement. The first map location is framed by the place it was constructed, on unceded Gadigal Country at the University of Sydney.
- If you know the name of a particular island or carceral site you wish to search, use the search area in the top corner.
- If you'd like to use the map to learn more about a single geographical site, select a single pinned location with your cursor.
- You may also filter categories of island confinement.
- You can scroll across the timeline or work backwards and forwards within distinct periods of research focus. To revert to the default view in the timeline, click the left arrow below the two magnifying glasses in the story slide or refresh the page.
